AVI Interns Take Flight: Highlights from Our Summer Program

2025_AVI_Intern_Banner_LinkedIn_Post-1This summer, AVI Aviation Inflatables and AVI Survival Products had the privilege of welcoming two bright interns, Niles Alexis and Troy Anderson, who brought energy, curiosity, and fresh perspectives to our team. Throughout their internship, they explored different aspects of our operations, built new skills, and contributed to meaningful projects that left a lasting impression. We asked them to reflect on their experiences—and here’s what they shared.

Image (14)Growing Skills and Knowledge – For both Niles and Troy, the internship was a time of tremendous learning. Niles discovered a new strength in
SolidWorks, a tool he had never used before. Troy deepened his understanding of core engineering practices, from filling out Engineering Change Notices to creating detailed tooling forms.

Overcoming Challenges – Internships are about growth, and growth often comes from tackling tough challenges. Niles pointed to remodeling a Cylinder Pocket Assembly in Inventor as the most demanding task, one that pushed his CAD skills to new levels. For Troy, it was the packing fixtures project, which required precision and collaboration. He and Niles dedicated countless hours to ensure every part came together seamlessly into a fully functioning unit.

Defining Career Paths – Both interns found clarity about their futures. “This internship solidified my career direction, being in aerospace engineering,” Niles shared, noting his excitement to keep pursuing the industry. Troy agreed, reflecting that the experience further confirmed his desire to build a career in aviation and aerospace.

Proud Accomplishments – The most rewarding part of the internship? Seeing hard work pay off. Niles took pride in seeing a part he designed move into production for emergency evacuation slides. Troy found deep satisfaction in completing packing fixtures for Emergency Slides, describing the sense of accomplishment as “an understatement.”

Image (18)AVI’s Workplace Culture – When asked to describe AVI in three words: Niles chose “Detail oriented. Hard working. Chill.” Troy answered with “Autonomous. Visionary. Innovative.” Both also highlighted values that stood out to them—Niles emphasizing AVI’s attention to detail, and Troy noting the company’s commitment to safety.

Feeling Supported – Support and inclusion were consistent themes in their reflections. Niles shared how engineers were always willing to guide him, no matter the question. Troy appreciated having every tool and resource he needed, along with team members ready to assist when challenges arose.

Advice for Future Interns – If you’re considering an internship with AVI, here’s their advice: Niles recommends arriving with CAD and drawing experience, as these skills proved critical during his time here. Troy encourages future interns not to be shy: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions—your work may depend on it. And maybe don’t bother Chris on his lunch break.”

Beyond Engineering – Both interns enjoyed exploring other departments outside of design. Niles was especially drawn to testing, finding the work exciting and engaging. Troy enjoyed hands-on exposure to manufacturing and testing, appreciating the balance between computer-based tasks and hands-on problem solving.Image (24)-1

Classroom Knowledge in Action –
Academic knowledge also played a role. Niles applied lessons from his Intro to Aerospace Engineering course
(AME-105 at USC). Troy found his coursework in CAD and engineering practices directly transferable to his work at AVI. Both agreed that previous CAD experience was essential to their success.

Looking Ahead – For Niles and Troy, this summer was more than just an internship—it was a stepping stone into their careers. They leave AVI with new skills, meaningful experiences, and a stronger sense of direction in aerospace engineering. We are grateful for their hard work, curiosity, and contributions, and we look forward to watching where their careers take them next.
